The Ages of Comics
Comic book history is divided into distinct eras, each marked by significant shifts in storytelling, art, and publishing.
Comic Indexer Eras are based on the traditional eras, but with the Modern era split up for more granular market analysis.
Traditional Eras
Birth of superheroes and classic cover art. Introduced iconic characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Known for vibrant covers featuring World War II themes.
Science fiction and space travel dominated. Horror and sci-fi comics flourished until "Seduction of the Innocent" led to the Comics Code.
Reintroduction of the Flash launched this era. Birth of Marvel Universe with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Focus shifted to key issues and storylines over cover art.
Darker, grittier storytelling emerged. The anti-hero was perfected with characters like Wolverine, Punisher, and Ghost Rider. Content drove key issue status.
Began with Marvel's Secret Wars limited series. Independent publishers rose to prominence. Black and white printing flourished. Multimedia crossovers and mega crossover events became standard. Ended with Jim Lee's X-Men series in 1991.
Image Comics established artist-driven publishing. Mass introduction of variant covers. Incentive variants and third-party grading (CGC, 2000) transformed collecting.
